Stepantsminda lies at about 1,700 metres in the Greater Caucasus, in the valley of the Terek River, on the Georgian Military Road that climbs from Tbilisi over the Jvari Pass towards the Russian border. Mount Kazbek, a dormant volcano of 5,054 metres, rises to the west of the village with glaciers below its summit.
On a steep ridge above the village stands the Gergeti Trinity Church, a stone church of the fourteenth century set against the snow-capped mountain, reached by a steep path or a rough road. The Dariali Gorge lies to the north, the Truso Valley has travertine springs and old stone towers, and the village of Juta sits beneath the jagged Chaukhi massif.
Khinkali, dumplings of spiced meat twisted into a knot and eaten by hand, are the mountain dish, with local cheeses, khachapuri bread, mutton stews and the strong spirit chacha. Snow lies on the heights for much of the year.
