Kutaisi, the main city of Imereti in western Georgia, was once the capital of the kingdom of Western Georgia and is linked by legend with Aia, the land of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The Rioni River runs through the centre, and the Colchis Fountain, with gilded animals, stands on one of its squares. The Bagrati Cathedral, an eleventh-century church on a hilltop, was ruined by the Ottomans in 1692 and rebuilt in modern times.
Gelati Monastery, founded in 1106 by King David the Builder, lies in the hills outside the city, with twelfth-century mosaics in its apse. Motsameta Monastery sits above a gorge, Prometheus Cave is a large cavern full of stalactites, and the Okatse and Martvili canyons have waterfalls, walkways and a boat ride. Sataplia nature reserve has dinosaur footprints.
Imeretian khachapuri, a round cheese-filled bread, is the local favourite, followed by lobio, beans in a clay pot, grilled meat, and walnut sauces such as satsivi. The Green Bazaar sells herbs, cheese and churchkhela, strings of walnuts dipped in grape syrup. Imereti has its own winemaking tradition, and a toast-heavy supra, the Georgian feast, can last all evening.
