Batumi lies on the Black Sea near the Turkish border, backed by green mountains that catch plenty of rain, giving the city a subtropical climate with palms and citrus. A long seafront boulevard of parks and fountains runs along the pebble beach, with the Alphabet Tower, the moving Ali and Nino statue and modern hotel towers. Behind it, the old town has tree-lined streets of early twentieth-century houses and Europe Square.
The Batumi Botanical Garden, on the Green Cape north of the city, rises in terraces above the sea with plants from every continent. To the south, the Roman fort of Gonio stands near the Turkish border, and inland the Adjara highlands hold waterfalls, the arched stone bridge at Makhuntseti and mountain villages, with Mtirala National Park, a wet forest of ferns and old trees, nearby.
Adjaruli khachapuri, a boat-shaped bread filled with melted cheese and topped with a raw egg and butter, is Batumi's signature dish, and the city also serves fresh fish, khinkali dumplings and churchkhela, a string of nuts dipped in grape syrup. The beach season is summer, and rain falls often through the rest of the year.
