Experience the best of Sarajevo
Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies in a mountain-ringed valley where Ottoman bazaars meet Austro-Hungarian boulevards.

Sarajevo follows the Miljacka River through a long valley with steep green hills on either side. Baščaršija, the old Ottoman bazaar, has copper workshops, tea houses and the Sebilj, a wooden fountain, and the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque dates from the 1530s. West of it, the streets turn to Austro-Hungarian façades and cafés, so that a mosque, a Catholic cathedral, an Orthodox church and a synagogue all stand within a short walk.
The Latin Bridge crosses the Miljacka close to where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914, an event that set off the First World War. The siege of 1992 to 1996 is remembered in the Tunnel of Hope museum near the airport, and in the Sarajevo Roses, red resin scars in the pavements. The 1984 Winter Olympics left ski slopes on Jahorina and Bjelašnica, and the Vrelo Bosne springs and parkland lie south-west of town.
Ćevapi, small grilled sausages of minced meat served in flatbread with raw onion, are the dish of the old town, along with burek, the coiled meat pie, and its cheese, spinach and potato cousins. Coffee is served Bosnian style, in a copper pot with a sugar cube and a cup of its own, and baklava and tufahija, a stuffed apple, close the meal.
