Experience the best of Visoko

Visoko lies in the Bosna valley, north-west of Sarajevo, ringed by green hills. In the Middle Ages it was one of the seats of the kings of Bosnia, and the ruins of the fortress called Visoki stand on the hill of Visočica above the town. The royal castle of Bobovac and the village of Kraljeva Sutjeska, with its Franciscan monastery, lie in the hills nearby.

In 2005 an amateur archaeologist claimed that Visočica and neighbouring hills were ancient pyramids, and the so-called Bosnian pyramids became a draw for visitors; archaeologists and geologists regard the hills as natural formations. The valley's documented past is medieval, and it holds fortress ruins, orchards and walks through woodland on the surrounding slopes.

Ćevapi, grilled minced meat served in flat bread with raw onion, and pita, a spiral of thin pastry filled with meat or cheese, are the everyday dishes, and coffee comes in a copper pot with sugar cubes. Autumn colours the surrounding hills.
