Experience the best of Salzburg
Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, is a baroque city on the Salzach River beneath a hilltop fortress, with the Alps at its edge.

The old town, on the left bank of the Salzach, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of baroque church domes, narrow lanes and arcaded courtyards, built on the salt trade and presided over by the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Mozart was born in 1756 in a yellow house on Getreidegasse, now a museum, while Residenzplatz and Domplatz hold the cathedral and the palaces of the prince-archbishops.
Across the river, the Mirabell gardens, with their Pegasus fountain and dwarf statues, appear in The Sound of Music, which was filmed in and around the city. A funicular climbs to the fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe to survive intact, and a cable car rises up the Untersberg. East lie the lakes of the Salzkammergut, south the ice caves at Werfen, and across the border Bavaria's Berchtesgaden.
Salzburger Nockerl, a sweet soufflé baked in three peaks, is the local pudding, and Mozartkugeln, balls of pistachio marzipan in chocolate, were first made here in the 1890s. Beer is poured from wooden barrels at the monastery brewery in Mülln. The Salzburg Festival fills the summer with opera and theatre, and Advent markets set up in front of the cathedral.
