Experience the best of Linz

Linz is Upper Austria's capital on the Danube, pairing a baroque old town and a hilltop church with media art, steelworks and its namesake torte.

Linz is Upper Austria's capital, strung along the Danube between Salzburg and Vienna. The Hauptplatz, a broad main square, is framed by baroque façades and the Trinity Column, and lanes lead up to the castle above the river. The Pöstlingberg, a hill north of the Danube crowned by a twin-towered pilgrimage church, is reached by a steep tram line.

Linz was a European Capital of Culture and is a centre of digital art: the Ars Electronica Center is a museum of media and technology, and the Lentos museum of modern art stands on the riverbank. Outside the city, St Florian Abbey, where the composer Anton Bruckner played the organ and is buried, lies to the south-east.

The Linzer torte, a lattice-topped almond and jam tart, takes its name from the city and is still baked in its cafés. Cycle paths follow the Danube through town, and beer gardens fill up on summer evenings. The lakes of the Salzkammergut lie to the south-west, with Salzburg beyond them.
