Experience the best of Innsbruck
Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, lies in a valley of the Inn River, with steep Alpine peaks rising directly behind its medieval old town.

Innsbruck sits in the broad Inn valley, so close under the limestone wall of the Nordkette range that cable cars carry people from the old town to the mountain slopes in minutes. Its arcaded streets lead to the Golden Roof, a balcony covered in gilded copper tiles, built around 1500 for Emperor Maximilian I. The Hofburg palace and the Hofkirche, with its row of bronze statues around Maximilian's cenotaph, stand close by.
The Bergisel ski jump, designed by Zaha Hadid, overlooks the city, and Ambras Castle holds a Renaissance collection of armour and curiosities. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and several ski areas, including the Stubai glacier, lie within a short drive. Hall in Tirol, a medieval town, and the quiet valleys of the Tyrolean Alps are within easy reach.
Tyrolean cooking is hearty: Gröstl, a pan of fried potatoes and bacon, dumplings with cheese or speck, and Kaiserschmarrn, a torn sweet pancake, or apple strudel after a day on the slopes. Cafés in the old town serve coffee and cakes with a view of the peaks. Winter brings snow and Christmas markets, and summer is for hiking and cycling.
