Experience the best of Quito
Quito, Ecuador's high Andean capital, has one of the best-preserved colonial centres in Latin America, ringed by volcanoes and green mountains.

The historic centre was among the very first places named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its churches, plazas and monasteries are spectacular. La Compañía de Jesús glows with gold leaf inside, the Basilica del Voto Nacional has gargoyles shaped like Ecuadorian animals, and Plaza Grande is surrounded by the cathedral and the presidential palace.
The winged Virgin of El Panecillo watches over the old town from a hill, and a cable car climbs the slopes of Pichincha volcano for vast views. La Ronda is a restored colonial street of cafés and craft shops, and the Mariscal and La Floresta districts have restaurants and nightlife. North of the city, the Mitad del Mundo monument marks the equator.
Locro de papa, a cheesy potato soup, warms the cool evenings, and empanadas, ceviche and fine chocolate are sold all over the old town. At about 2,800 metres, days are spring-like and nights cool, with a drier season from June to September. Otavalo's market, Cotopaxi volcano and the cloud forest of Mindo are easy trips, and many journeys to the Galápagos and the Amazon begin here.
