Itinerary

  1. On the border of the province of Pichincha, there is the Cotopaxi National Park, an ecological reserve that combines the landscape of the Andean páramo, volcanic soil and the lagoon that emerge from the snow-capped mountains. Its main attraction is the volcano that bears its name which in Spanish means 'moon neck' given because of the conical shape of the crater. The elevation of the volcano is of 5,897 meters above sea level and is the second highest in the country. Visitors can discover different species of plants and animals like: wolves, rabbits, bears, condors, and among others that live in that territory. Visit The Interpretation Center: All information about the Cotopaxi National Park is available at the Interpretation Center, or better known as the Park Museum. The Center has showrooms, a souvenir shop and a coffee shop. It is located inside Mariscal Sucre Station (or Control Caspi entrance). Walk To The José Rivas Refuge (4864 Masl): Since the 70s, this refuge has been a welcoming place for professional mountaineers and amateurs coming to visit the Cotopaxi Volcano. Its name is in honor of the priest José Ribas who built it with the Mountaineering Club of San Gabriel High School. This place is located on the slopes of the volcano and an hour's walk from the parking lot.

  • 5A great day out with Jorge

We had a great day on our Quito Bus Tour to Cotapaxi. Our guide Jorge was fantastic, his energy was very warm as he was tirelessly and effortlessly transitioning between Spanish and English in banter, conversation and instruction. He looked out for everyone during the tour. The middle of the tour there’s a hike where you ascend from 4600m to 4860m to the Refugio base camp at Cotapaxi. He didn’t pressure anyone to finish the hike if they felt it was beyond their limits and congratulated everyone for recognising their limitations and taking responsibility for their safety. I noticed that he remembered pretty much everyone’s name (14 people including westerners, latinos and koreans) which was impressive. The guiding through the interpretation centre and the lagoon was great and Jorge clearly has a passion for the mountains, the environment, the climate and his community and I feel lucky he shared that with us. I highly recommend this tour as an easy, stress free way to see the Cotapaxi National Park. Was perfect for us who had little time and money to spend in Ecuador.

  • 5Must do!!

This tour is a MUST DO!!! I am so glad I got to not only see Cotopaxi, but hike up to the Base Camp!! Jorge did a fantastic job of explaining things and keeping us very informed of food stops, bathroom stops, etc. He was extremely friendly and made sure we got some good photos! The drive up to the parking lot of Cotopaxi was no easy feat and I honestly cannot believe a bus can even make the drive, but Mauricio handled it like a boss!!! I felt super safe as a solo female joining along!! The price is fantastic for the value you get. Also, breakfast was huge and $4 and lunch was also huge, included a petting zoo with alpacas, and was only $6! They also dropped me off at a different spot along their route rather than my hostel so I could go for a much deserved beer!!

  • 5Perfect for a solo traveler who wants to feel safe

Just an amazing experience. Everything flowed so smoothly thanks to Jorge. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Cotopaxi and you can tell how much he loves showing the beauty of his country. As a solo woman traveler it is important to have a guide that is attentive and responsive and he was. The other tourists were impressed with him as well. The tour itself was phenomenal. Beautiful views along with information about the environment. The schedule was efficient and gave enough time to rest during the hike and stop for photos. The Cafe and restaurant where breakfast and lunch were sold were delicious. It was just the right amount of time and information. The Driver drove safely and the bus was clean. I've done many tours but this was one of my favorite.

  • 5Great Experience with an Amazing Guide

I joined a Cotopaxi tour with Daniel as our guide, and it was such a great experience. Daniel speaks both English and Spanish fluently and explained everything at each stop really well. During the hike, my beanie got blown away by the strong wind, and he even helped me look for it and stayed supportive until we finally got it back. He also took great care of everyone in the group and made sure that no one was left behind. I was really impressed by how attentive and caring he was throughout the whole tour. Daniel is such a kind and charming person, and I would definitely recommend him as a guide if you’re visiting Cotopaxi. ⛰️

About Quito

Quito, Ecuador's high Andean capital, has one of the best-preserved colonial centres in Latin America, ringed by volcanoes and green mountains.

The historic centre was among the very first places named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its churches, plazas and monasteries are spectacular. La Compañía de Jesús glows with gold leaf inside, the Basilica del Voto Nacional has gargoyles shaped like Ecuadorian animals, and Plaza Grande is surrounded by the cathedral and the presidential palace.

Top-ranked sights in Quito: Cotopaxi National Park, Basilica of the National Vow (La Basílica del Voto Nacional), Independence Plaza (Plaza de la Independencia).
