Baños de Agua Santa lies at about 1,800 metres, where the Andes drop towards the Amazon basin, on the Pastaza River in Tungurahua province. The town grew around its thermal baths, fed by volcanic springs, and around the Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Water, a pilgrimage church of dark stone. Tungurahua volcano rises above the rooftops.

A road known as the Route of the Waterfalls follows the Pastaza gorge east, passing cascades such as the Pailón del Diablo, the Devil's Cauldron, where a river drops into a narrow rock chasm. Rafting, canyoning and bridge-jumping are all done in the valley. The swing at the Casa del Árbol, on a hillside above the town, looks out over the volcano, and the road continues down to the Amazon town of Puyo.

Melcocha, a chewy taffy of sugar cane syrup pulled by hand in shop doorways, is the town's sweet. Local cooking includes trout, cuy (roast guinea pig) and grilled corn from street stalls, and canelazo, a hot cane-spirit punch, warms cool evenings. The climate is mild all year, warm by day and cool at night.
