Nusa Lembongan lies in the Badung Strait, a short boat ride from the Bali mainland, and forms a group with the larger Nusa Penida and the tiny Nusa Ceningan. The island is only a few kilometres long, with a main village at Jungutbatu, a curve of white sand and slopes of seaweed farms that have supported villagers for decades. A narrow suspension bridge links Lembongan to Ceningan, and the lanes are small enough to walk.

Mushroom Bay and Dream Beach have fine sand, and at Devil's Tear waves explode against the cliffs. Surfers know the breaks called Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds, while snorkellers and divers visit reefs where manta rays are often seen. Mangrove forest on the north-east coast can be explored by kayak, and the cliffs of Nusa Penida, including Kelingking Beach, lie a short boat ride away.

Grilled fish with sambal, nasi campur and satay are served at beach warungs, with fresh coconut and fruit juices. The dry season from April to October is the sunniest stretch, and heavy showers arrive in the wetter months between November and March.
