Experience the best of Bandung

Bandung is the cool highland capital of West Java, a city of Dutch Art Deco buildings, factory outlets, tea hills, volcanic craters and Sundanese food.

Bandung lies in a mountain basin about 700 metres above sea level, which keeps it cooler than the coastal plain, and the Dutch once called it the Paris of Java. Many of the buildings from that period are in the Art Deco style, among them the Gedung Sate government building, whose tower is topped by an ornament shaped like a satay skewer. The Asian-African Conference was held in the Gedung Merdeka in 1955, and Braga Street is lined with old shopfronts and cafés.

North of the city, the Tangkuban Perahu volcano has a crater that can be walked around, and the hill town of Lembang has gardens and farms. To the south, Kawah Putih, a pale turquoise crater lake, and the tea plantations of Ciwidey and Pangalengan lie in the hills. Cihampelas Street is known for jeans, and factory outlets sell clothes across the city.

Sundanese cooking favours fresh vegetables with chilli sambal and fried fish or chicken, while street snacks include batagor, fried fish dumplings in peanut sauce, siomay, steamed dumplings, and cireng, fried tapioca pastries. Angklung, a bamboo instrument, is the sound of the region. Evenings are cool, with afternoon rain from November to March and drier weather between June and September.
