Experience the best of Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java, a university city with a sultan's palace, batik workshops and the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan close by.

The sultan of Yogyakarta is also the region's governor, and his walled palace, the Kraton, is still lived in and holds a museum and a court gamelan orchestra. Close by, the Taman Sari water castle, once the royal pleasure garden, has pools and passageways, and Malioboro Street runs through the centre with shops, becak pedicabs and food stalls. The city is also famed for batik, silverwork and shadow-puppet theatre.

Borobudur, the vast ninth-century Buddhist monument covered in relief carvings, rises from the plain about forty kilometres to the north-west, and Prambanan, a group of tall Hindu temples of the same era, stands to the east. Mount Merapi, an active volcano, looms over the north, and the dark-sand beaches of Parangtritis lie to the south. Kotagede, the old silver town, and the royal tombs at Imogiri are quieter stops.

Gudeg, young jackfruit stewed with palm sugar and coconut, is the local dish, eaten with rice, egg and chilli. Street stalls called angkringan serve small rice parcels, grilled snacks and sweet tea late into the evening, and bakpia pastries are the souvenir. Yogyakarta is warm all year; the dry season from May to September is best for temples, and the wet season brings afternoon rain.
