Lombok lies across a deep strait from Bali, and the Wallace Line, the boundary between Asian and Australasian wildlife, runs through that water. The island is dominated by Mount Rinjani, a volcano of 3,726 metres, with a crater lake, Segara Anak, and hot springs, and treks to the rim take days. Most of the people are Sasak, mainly Muslim, and their villages keep traditional thatched houses.

The south coast has wide beaches like Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan, with surf breaks around Kuta. In the north-west, the Gili Islands, three small coral-fringed islands with no cars, are reached by boat. Waterfalls such as Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep lie near Senaru, below Rinjani, and Mataram, on the west coast, is the island's main city, with the water palace of Narmada nearby.

Ayam taliwang, chicken grilled and served with a fierce chilli sauce, is the island's best-known dish, with plecing kangkung, water spinach in tomato-chilli sambal, and sate rembiga, beef skewers. The dry season runs roughly from May to October, and the rice fields turn green after the rains.
