Experience the best of Jakarta

Jakarta is Indonesia's largest city, on the north coast of Java, with old Dutch Batavia, tall towers, mosques, markets and endless street food.

Jakarta began as the Dutch trading port of Batavia, and the old town, Kota Tua, still has colonial buildings around Fatahillah Square, including the former town hall that now houses a history museum. Nearby, the harbour of Sunda Kelapa has wooden schooners moored at the quay. The National Monument, topped with a gilded flame, stands in Merdeka Square in the centre.

The Istiqlal Mosque, among the largest in Southeast Asia, stands across the road from the neo-Gothic Jakarta Cathedral. The National Museum, known as the Elephant Museum, holds Indonesian art and artefacts, and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah displays traditional houses from across the islands. Boats leave the north coast for the Thousand Islands, and the botanical gardens of Bogor lie a drive of one to two hours south.

Street food is the true local cooking: nasi goreng, satay, soto soups, gado-gado salad with peanut sauce and kerak telor, a sticky-rice and egg omelette of the Betawi people. Warung stalls and food courts fill every corner. Jakarta is humid and warm all year; the drier months are May to September, while heavy rain from November to March can cause flooding. Traffic is slow, so plan around it.
