Experience the best of Lagoi

Lagoi lies on the north coast of Bintan, one of Indonesia's Riau Islands, facing the South China Sea about an hour by ferry from Singapore. A strip of coast here has been developed as a resort district, with beachfront hotels, golf courses, marinas and a landscaped village, and the rest of the island is a mix of coconut and rubber plantations, fishing villages and forest.

Calm bays of pale sand are the main draw, with mangroves behind the shore that can be explored by kayak, and fishing villages along the coast. South of the resort district, Tanjung Pinang, the island's main town, has a harbour front and Chinese temples, and nearby Penyengat Island has a yellow-walled mosque from the nineteenth century.

Seafood is the staple: grilled prawns, gonggong, a sea snail boiled and eaten with a spicy dip, and otak-otak, fish paste grilled in a banana leaf, are local favourites. The weather is warm every month, with most of the rain arriving with the north-east monsoon around the turn of the year.
