Jimbaran sits on the narrow neck of land joining Bali's southern Bukit peninsula to the rest of the island, close to the airport. A long beach curves round the bay facing the Indian Ocean, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand at the northern end, near Kedonganan's fish market, and a gentle sea in the dry season.

At dusk, tables are set on the sand and fresh fish, prawns and squid are grilled over coconut husks as the sun drops into the sea; this is the village's signature scene. Uluwatu's clifftop sea temple and its sunset dance, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana monument and surfing beaches such as Padang Padang are a short drive south. Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa have water sports, and Seminyak and Kuta lie north.

Balinese flavours run through the seafood: sambal matah, a raw shallot and lemongrass relish, and rice with grilled fish are classics. Offerings of flowers and incense are laid out daily at doorways. The dry months from May to September have the calmest weather, while the wet season from November to March brings warm downpours and humidity.
