Experience the best of Gdańsk
Gdańsk is a Baltic port in northern Poland with a rebuilt Hanseatic old town, amber shops, a medieval crane and the shipyard where Solidarity began.

Gdańsk grew rich on the Baltic grain and timber trade, and its Main Town was rebuilt after the damage of the Second World War in the style of earlier centuries. The Long Market is the centre, with Neptune's Fountain and the Artus Court, and the gates at either end open onto the Motława River. St Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world, rises above the narrow houses.
Along the river, the medieval Crane, a wooden port crane, stands beside the waterfront promenade, and Mariacka Street, lined with amber workshops and stoops, runs to the church. The Gdańsk Shipyard is the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, and the European Solidarity Centre tells that story. Westerplatte, where the Second World War began, lies at the harbour mouth. Sopot, with its long wooden pier, and Gdynia form a Tricity along the bay, and Malbork Castle is south-east.
Pierogi, żurek, a sour rye soup served in bread, and smoked fish are the local fare, with Goldwasser, an herbal liqueur flecked with gold, a drink the city is known for. Amber washed up on the Baltic shore is sold in the street. The St Dominic's Fair, a street market and festival dating back to 1260, fills the old town each summer.
