Experience the best of Krakow
Kraków, Poland's royal former capital, has a beautifully preserved medieval old town, crowned by Wawel Castle above the Vistula River.

The Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, is lined with burghers' houses and centred on the arcaded Cloth Hall. St Mary's Basilica rises at one corner, its carved wooden altarpiece a Gothic masterpiece, and a trumpet call sounds from its tower through the day and night.
Wawel Hill holds the royal castle and the cathedral where Polish kings were crowned and buried. Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, has synagogues, cafés and a lively bar scene, and across the river a museum in Schindler's former factory tells the story of the city under occupation. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, with chapels carved from salt, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial are the most visited day trips.
Ring-shaped obwarzanek bread is sold from street carts all day, and restaurants serve pierogi dumplings, żurek sour rye soup and hearty stews. The city shines in spring and early autumn, and in December glittering szopki, nativity scenes modelled on Kraków's own churches, gather in the Main Market Square for a much-loved contest.
