Experience the best of Warsaw
Warsaw is Poland's capital on the Vistula River, a city carefully rebuilt after the Second World War, with a restored old town, palaces and modern towers.

Warsaw was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War, and its Old Town was rebuilt brick by brick from paintings and plans, work that earned it a UNESCO listing. Castle Square, with the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column, leads into the market square, where a mermaid, the city's symbol, stands guard. The Palace of Culture and Science, a Soviet-era skyscraper of 1955, still dominates the skyline.
Łazienki Park has peacocks, a palace on a lake and summer piano recitals by the Chopin monument, while Wilanów is a baroque royal residence with gardens. The POLIN Museum tells the thousand-year story of Polish Jews, and the Warsaw Uprising Museum covers 1944. Praga, across the river, kept its old courtyards and has become a district of studios and bars. Chopin's birthplace at Żelazowa Wola lies about fifty kilometres west.
Polish food fills the table with pierogi dumplings, żurek soup in a bread bowl, bigos hunter's stew, potato pancakes and doughnuts called pączki. Old-style milk bars still serve simple home cooking. Summers are warm and the riverbank buzzes; winters are cold and snowy, with Christmas markets in the Old Town. May to September is best.
