Belize City sits low on the Caribbean coast at the mouth of Haulover Creek, which divides the town in two, and an old swing bridge over the creek is its best-known landmark. It was the capital until the government moved inland to Belmopan in 1970 after a devastating hurricane, but it remains the biggest city and the main port. Wooden colonial houses stand beside newer buildings, and the Museum of Belize occupies a former prison.
Most visitors pass through on the way to the islands. Boats run out to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, on the Belize Barrier Reef, a long chain of coral that is a World Heritage site and includes the Blue Hole. On the mainland, the Belize Zoo shows native animals about an hour's drive west, the Maya site of Altun Ha lies to the north, and Lamanai stands beside the New River Lagoon.
Belizean food blends Creole, Garifuna and Maya traditions: rice and beans with stewed chicken, fry jacks for breakfast, and hudut, a Garifuna dish of fish in coconut broth served with mashed plantain. Conch and lobster appear in season. The dry months from February to May are the sunniest on the coast.
