Ambergris Caye lies off the north-east coast of Belize, divided from the Mexican mainland by a narrow channel at its northern tip. The island runs for about forty kilometres, mostly flat and fringed with palms, and nearly everyone lives at its southern end in San Pedro, a small town of sandy streets where golf carts and bicycles are as common as cars.
The Belize Barrier Reef, one of the longest in the world, runs close offshore. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley offer snorkelling among nurse sharks, stingrays and shoals of coloured fish, and day trips go out to the Great Blue Hole, a vast marine sinkhole on Lighthouse Reef. The Bacalar Chico reserve in the north protects mangroves and lagoons, and on the mainland the Maya temples of Altun Ha and Lamanai rise from the forest.
Seafood anchors the table: spiny lobster in season, conch ceviche, grilled snapper with rice and beans, and fry jacks, puffs of fried dough, at breakfast. Belikin is the beer of the country, and rum punch comes with the sunset. The dry season from about December to April has the calmest seas, and the rains arrive in the summer months.
