Experience the best of Dangriga

Dangriga is the capital of the Stann Creek District and the centre of Garifuna culture in Belize, on the Caribbean coast a short distance from the barrier reef. The Garifuna, descendants of West Africans and Indigenous Caribbean people, arrived on this coast in 1832, and the town's low wooden houses, waterfront and drum makers reflect that heritage.

Garifuna Settlement Day, on 19 November, fills the town with drumming, dancing and boat processions. Offshore, cayes such as Tobacco Caye and South Water Caye and the atoll of Glover's Reef, part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, offer snorkelling and diving. Inland, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary protects forest where jaguars live, and Mayflower Bocawina National Park has waterfalls and Maya ruins.

Hudut, fish in a coconut broth with mashed plantain, and cassava bread are the Garifuna staples, alongside fresh seafood, and citrus fruit grows in the Stann Creek valley, where the rains fall mostly from June to November.
