Experience the best of Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda, known locally as PG, is the main town of the Toledo District, on the Gulf of Honduras in the far south of Belize. A small waterfront, a market and wooden houses on stilts give it a quiet, easy character. Garifuna, Maya, Creole, East Indian and Mennonite communities all live in the region.

Inland, Maya villages of the Q'eqchi' and Mopan peoples lie among rainforest. The district's ruins include Lubaantun, set among hills, Nim Li Punit, known for its tall carved stelae, and Uxbenka. The Sapodilla Cayes, offshore, are a marine reserve, Rio Blanco National Park has a waterfall pool, and Blue Creek has a cave and swimming holes.

Cacao grown by Maya farmers is turned into chocolate, and stew chicken, rice and beans, and fresh fish fill the town's small restaurants. Toledo is the wettest part of Belize, which keeps its forest lush and green.
