Experience the best of Antigua
Antigua Guatemala is a colonial city of cobbled streets, ruined churches and pastel façades, ringed by three volcanoes in the Guatemalan highlands.

Antigua was the capital of Spanish Guatemala until earthquakes in 1773 led to the move of the government to the present capital. The grid of cobbled streets and low colonial houses survived, together with the ruins of grand churches and convents, and the town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The yellow Santa Catalina Arch, with its clock tower, frames Volcán de Agua at the end of a street.
Volcán de Agua, Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango rise close by, and a hike up Pacaya, an active volcano, is a half-day outing. The Cerro de la Cruz gives the standard view of the town. Coffee farms cover the valley floor, and Lake Atitlán, ringed by volcanoes and Mayan villages, lies a few hours to the west. Guatemala City is a short drive east.
Pepián, a thick stew of roasted spices and seeds, is a national dish, and tamales, black beans and tortillas appear at every meal. Chocolate and coffee are local pleasures, and markets sell handwoven textiles. Holy Week is the town's great event, with processions over carpets of coloured sawdust and flowers. Afternoon rain is common between May and October.
