Experience the best of Guatemala City
Guatemala City is the capital of Guatemala, a sprawling highland city of plazas, museums of Maya art and textiles, and a base for volcanoes and Antigua.

Guatemala City sits in a highland valley at about 1,500 metres, which keeps the climate mild. The city is divided into numbered zones, and Zona 1, the historic centre, has the Plaza de la Constitución, the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Zona 10, the modern district, holds the newer hotels, restaurants and galleries.
Zona 10 is home to the Popol Vuh Museum, with Maya ceramics, and the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress, whose textiles show the weaving of highland villages. The National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Zona 13 has Maya stelae and jade. The ruins of Kaminaljuyú, a Maya city, lie in the west of the city, and a giant relief map of the country stands in Zona 2. Antigua, with its colonial streets, is about an hour's drive away, and the Pacaya volcano lies to the south.
Tamales are traditionally eaten on Saturdays, pepián is a rich spiced stew of meat and vegetables, and fiambre, a cold salad of many ingredients, is prepared for All Saints on 1 November. Guatemalan coffee and hot chocolate are served in cafés. At that height days are warm and nights cool, and the rains fall from May to October.
