Puerto Quetzal is a port on Guatemala's Pacific coast, in the department of Escuintla, on a hot plain between the mountains and the sea. It handles cargo and cruise ships, and the small town of Puerto San José and the beach resort of Iztapa lie close by along the same coast. Behind it, sugar-cane fields stretch inland toward the line of volcanoes.

The beaches are dark volcanic sand with strong surf, and the mangrove canals of Monterrico, east along the coast, shelter herons and other waterbirds. Sea turtles come ashore to nest, and conservation projects release hatchlings. Inland, the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala, a World Heritage Site under the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango, lies about two hours away by road.

Fresh fish, shrimp and ceviche, served with lime and chilli, are the foods of the coast, and vendors sell coconuts and cold fruit drinks on the sand. The rains arrive in the middle of the year, heaviest in the afternoons, and the first months are dry and very warm.
