Itinerary

  1. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks, and is considered an exemplary piece of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

About Mostar

Mostar is the main city of Herzegovina, set on the Neretva River and known for its arched Ottoman bridge and the old bazaar around it.

Mostar takes its name from the bridge-keepers who once guarded the crossing, and the Old Bridge, Stari Most, is its symbol: a single high stone arch built by the Ottomans in 1566 over the green Neretva. It was destroyed in 1993 during the war and rebuilt, reopening in 2004, and the old town around it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cobbled lanes of the Kujundžiluk bazaar sell copperware and crafts.

Top-ranked sights in Mostar: Kravice Waterfall (Vodopad Kravica), Old Bridge (Stari Most), Blagaj Monastery (Blagaj Tekija).
