3. Near to the main road through Matale, the Muthumariamman Hindu temple is a tall, exuberantly decorated structure that can be easily seen from afar. The prominent towers, called Gopurams, boast hundreds of detailed sculptures, in a rich mosaic of colour. These Gopurams structures can be seen in other Hindu temples across the island, as well as in Southern India.

  My husband and I had such a brilliant day visiting Sigiriya and Dambulla with Irfan. He was a fantastic guide, sharing stories about Sri Lanka and local customs along the way. He stopped at beautiful viewpoints and little food stalls so we could try delicious local treats. At both sites, he showed us where to buy tickets and made sure we knew exactly where to go. His car was clean and wonderfully air-conditioned and his driving made us feel completely safe. A thoughtful, friendly guide who made the whole trip easy and fun!

• 5Riding with Irfan

  Irfan made our day trip from Kandy to Sigiriya one of our favourite days in Sri Lanka. He was a brilliant driver, very funny, and kept pulling fun little surprises out of nowhere. We saw the incredible Buddhas inside the cave temple, climbed Lion Rock, stopped to try local fruit, and had a huge Sri Lankan buffet at an excellent local restaurant we never would have found ourselves. We can’t thank him enough for showing us around his country. We could not recommend him enough!

  I booked with this tour company because of Ms. Diviya. Before the trip, we stayed in touch via WhatsApp. Even with the 3.5-hour time difference between Japan and Sri Lanka, she was always super quick to respond and put my mind at ease. She continued to check in on me after I landed in Colombo, making my solo trip feel completely stress-free and safe. I’m deeply grateful for her warmth and exceptional hospitality. I’m also super grateful to Mr. Irfan, my private driver from Colombo to Kandy, for his wonderful hospitality and careful driving. I get motion sick easily, but he was always mindful of that, taking unpaved roads extra slow so I wouldn't feel unwell. The heat outside was brutal, but the car was always cool and clean, which made traveling and sightseeing so pleasant. Big thanks to him for stopping at local spots so I could refresh and introducing me to local Sri Lankan food!

  What an amazing guide Irfan is. We had a fantastic time on his tuk tuk tour. He is very knowledgeable about Sri Lanka’s history and wildlife. He gave us lots of recommendations, including the best foods to eat during our stay. I 100% recommend Irfan to anybody wanting a fun and informative tour.

About Kandy

Kandy is the hill-country city of Sri Lanka, home to the Temple of the Tooth, a tree-fringed lake and a botanical garden among tea-covered hills.

Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings until the British took it in 1815. It stands around an artificial lake, about 500 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO site, holds a relic said to be a tooth of the Buddha, and pilgrims bring lotus flowers each day. Drummers and dancers perform at the shrine's rituals.
