Hikkaduwa stretches along the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, a strip of palm-fringed beach lined with guesthouses, cafés and surf shops. The Hikkaduwa Marine National Park protects a coral reef offshore, seen from glass-bottomed boats and by snorkellers, and turtles come to feed in the shallows. Surfers use the reef breaks along the shore.

Galle Fort, a Dutch-era walled town and World Heritage site, is about sixteen kilometres south. Ambalangoda, to the north, is known for its carved wooden masks and traditional dance, and turtle hatcheries line the coast. Boat trips on the Madu River pass mangrove islands, and Bentota has a wide river mouth and a beach. Inland, the tea country and rainforest are within reach.

Grilled fish and prawns are cooked on the beach, and rice and curry comes with coconut sambol, string hoppers and spicy fish curry. King coconut is sold from roadside stalls. The dry season runs from November to April, and the south-west monsoon from May to October brings rough seas and heavy rain.
