Negombo's long beach is lined with guesthouses, cafés and seafood restaurants, and outrigger canoes and fishing boats pull up on the sand each morning. The fish market, one of the busiest on the island, spreads its catch out to dry in the sun along the shore, a vivid scene of traders and gulls.
The town has a strong Catholic heritage from the Portuguese and Dutch eras, and its many churches, among them the large St Mary's with its painted ceilings, give Negombo the nickname Little Rome. The remains of a Dutch fort, a colonial-era canal running down the coast and the mangrove-lined Negombo Lagoon can all be explored by boat or bicycle.
Seafood is the town's pride: crab curry, lagoon prawns and grilled fish, with hoppers and kottu roti on hand too. The best beach weather comes from about November to April, while the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas in summer. Colombo is a short drive south, and Negombo is a natural first or last stop on a journey around the island, with Sigiriya and Kandy within reach.
