Galle Face Green, a long seafront lawn, fills with families, kite flyers and street-food stalls as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. Nearby, the Fort district keeps colonial buildings such as the Old Dutch Hospital, restored as shops and restaurants, and the red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque rises over the crowded market streets of Pettah.

Gangaramaya Temple mixes several architectural styles with a museum of curiosities, while the Seema Malaka meditation pavilion floats on Beira Lake. Viharamahadevi Park and the National Museum sit close together, Mount Lavinia's beach lies a short trip south, and the Kelaniya temple, one of the island's most revered, is just outside the city.

Lunch is often rice and curry with many small dishes, and bowl-shaped hoppers, kottu roti chopped on a hot griddle and fresh seafood come out in the evenings. Colombo is warm and humid all year, with monsoon rains mainly from late spring into summer and again in autumn; the drier months from December to March are the most popular. The city is a natural base for Galle, Kandy and the beaches of the south coast.
