Uyuni stands at about 3,650 metres on the southern Altiplano, a wind-swept railway town of wide streets and low buildings. Its train cemetery, a few kilometres out on the plain, holds rusting steam locomotives and carriages left from the days when British-built railways carried minerals to the Pacific. The town is the main base for visits to the Salar de Uyuni.

The Salar is the largest salt flat in the world, a white crust of more than ten thousand square kilometres lying over a briny lake. At Colchani, salt is still raked, dried and bagged by hand. Out on the flat, Isla Incahuasi rises from the white plain, covered with giant cacti. Beyond the Salar, routes continue south past volcanoes, red and green lagoons, flamingos and geysers towards the border with Chile.

Food is hearty and simple: llama steak, quinoa soup, potatoes and grilled trout, with coca tea to help with the altitude. Nights are cold all year, and the dry months from May to October are the easiest for crossing the salt. From December to March a thin sheet of rainwater turns the surface into a mirror for the sky.
