5It was amazing! Great...
It was amazing! Great tour! Great hosting and food. The food was fresh and healthy. Our guide was very attentive and knowledgeable.
5Once in a lifetime experience!
This tour was amazing from start to finish! Our tour guide José was very knowledgeable and great company throughout the day. Due to this being the dry season, we shouldn’t have seen the mirror effect. However, due to some recent snow melting, we had the opportunity to see this. The tour has a stated finish time and throughout the day, José recommended how much time to spend at each attraction to ensure we had time to see the mirror effect. The time allocated at each stop was the perfect amount and meant we weren’t hanging around in places for longer after we’d seen everything. José was a wizz with the camera and took some funny perspective pictures on the dry salt and then some amazing reflection photos/videos on the wet salt. We will cherish these memories forever. What an amazing day!! Thank you so much José!!
2Not what I expected
Very mixed feelings about this trip overall. The salt flats in Bolivia were somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a long time and I was really looking forward to this trip. I don’t speak Spanish and therefore booked this trip in particular as it was advertised as being conducted in English with a guide. We were a group of 8 and split into 2 cars. 4 were in the car with the Jose who was the English speaking guide and myself and 3 others were in another car with Bernardo who was the driver and did not speak English. As soon as we all got into the car, we were all really excited and looking forward to the day ahead. We asked Bernardo some questions in English to which he quite aggressively responded that he didn’t speak any English. We were all quite taken aback by his tone. One of the other tourists in the car spoke a moderate amount of Spanish and therefore asked him something in Spanish, again he abruptly responded that he didn’t speak English and ignored us. A few minutes later his behaviour changed completely and he was asking in Spanish our names and where we were from. He was very enthusiastic and looking back, taking his hands off the wheel etc whilst at high speeds. He proceed to exclaim some things excitedly in Spanish which I didn’t understand much of. Then during lunchtime, there were 2 vegetarians in our group. One of the tourists had used the serving spoon to put some meat on her plate so we agreed to only use the serving spoon for the meat and use the tongs for the rest of the vegetarian foods. This wasn’t the best as it was difficult getting quinoa out with serving tongs but we all agreed to avoid cross contamination. I think maybe due to a language barrier but Bernardo was not happy about this and kept trying to put the serving spoon into the bowl of quinoa. Also during lunch he wasn’t very happy about one of the tourists taking pictures with her meal and was looking very annoyed and making comments in Spanish. Jose had asked us to meet back at the cars at a certain time after lunch. I went back a few minutes early and as the car was open I went inside to take some layers of clothing off as it was warm. I was the only person in the car when Bernardo got in. He started the car and I asked in English whether I should get out. He said he doesn’t understand me and started driving away. He parked the car one block away, kept the windows down a little and left the car. I was left alone, away from my group. I wasn’t sure whether to get out and look for the rest of the group or to stay inside. No one else knew where I was. The only contact number I had was the companies WhatsApp number which I messaged around 10 mins after being left alone. However as soon as I messaged them, the rest of my group appeared and I deleted the WhatsApp message. The rest of the group informed me they didn’t know where I was or where the car had gone. At some points during the trip Bernardo did point out some things as we were driving along. But other times he would completely ignore us even when one of the tourists was speaking to him in Spanish. Another issue I had was at the start of the trip, Jose had informed us that it was really important we were all on time to ensure we got to the sunset on time. We were given a time to meet back at the cars and everyone in the group would arrive on time. However we would then be stood there waiting for Jose and Bernardo. We would be watching them in the distance smoking and talking to other tour guides whilst they could see us all waiting at the cars. Jose had excellent English and also excellent knowledge of all the places we visited. He would talk about the history and important points about each place when we arrived providing insight and context. The tour did not include the eyes of salt and our guide/ driver did not take or suggest any perspective photos or funny videos which was mentioned in the itinerary. Overall, the salt flats were incredible and other worldly. The information Jose provided was great. I was let down by our non English speaking driver and his behaviour throughout the trip and the lack of opportunity to take some perspective photos.
5Fantastic day at Salar de Uyuni
We had a great time on this tour! Our driver and guide Eduardo was excellent. He suggested an alternative route where we could see the mirror effect even during the dry season, which was a great surprise and gave us plenty of opportunities for really nice photos. Everything was well organized and all costs were clear. Lunch and a lovely sunset picnic were included. The views were amazing and Uyuni is truly a special place. Highly recommended!
5Highly recommended!
An absolutely amazing experience - after 3 weeks in South America my highlight! Santos was a wonderful and dedicated guide.
1Sad situation
We never made it to Uyuni! We sat in the airport in La Paz for four hours while the flight to Uyuni was repeatedly delayed for rain, making a landing dangerous. I communicated with the tour operator regarding the delays and then when the flight was cancelled and that probably would be cancelled the following day due to a storm on the way. The tour operator simply said he was sorry and offered no path for a refund. I reached out to Viator for a refund, but the system didn’t allow me to explain the situation other than we did not show up for the tour. We learned from the State Department the next day that a snowstorm had shut down Uyuni and left 200 people stranded. This was so unfortunate because the main reason we came to Bolivia was to visit the Salt Flats of Uyuni.

About Uyuni
Uyuni is a high, dusty town on Bolivia's southern altiplano, the starting point for crossings of the vast white Salar de Uyuni salt flat.
Uyuni stands at about 3,650 metres on the southern Altiplano, a wind-swept railway town of wide streets and low buildings. Its train cemetery, a few kilometres out on the plain, holds rusting steam locomotives and carriages left from the days when British-built railways carried minerals to the Pacific. The town is the main base for visits to the Salar de Uyuni.
Top-ranked sights in Uyuni: Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes), Tunupa Volcano.
