Experience the best of Sucre

Sucre sits at about 2,800 metres in a valley of the Andes, and its whitewashed centre, the Ciudad Blanca, is a World Heritage site. The Casa de la Libertad on the main square, Plaza 25 de Mayo, is where Bolivia's declaration of independence was signed in 1825. The city is the constitutional capital and seat of the Supreme Court, while the government sits in La Paz. Convents, cloisters and red-tiled roofs fill the streets.

The viewpoint at La Recoleta looks down over the rooftops, and a textile museum shows weaving from the Tarabuco and Jalq'a peoples. At the Cal Orck'o quarry on the edge of town, a limestone wall is covered in thousands of dinosaur footprints. On Sundays the market in the village of Tarabuco, in the hills to the south-east, draws highland families who trade textiles.

Sucre is famous for its chocolate, with workshops selling bars and filled sweets, and its bakeries turn out salteñas, juicy baked pastries eaten as a mid-morning snack. Chorizo chuquisaqueño and spicy mondongo are regional dishes. The climate is gentle, with sunny days all year and cool evenings; the wettest months run from December to March.
