Experience the best of Skagen

Skagen sits at the far northern tip of Jutland, where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat meet at Grenen, a sandspit where visitors can stand with a foot in each sea and watch the waves collide. The town of yellow-washed houses with red tile roofs is Denmark's northernmost, and its harbour is a busy fishing port.

In the late nineteenth century painters including P. S. Krøyer, Anna Ancher and Michael Ancher gathered here, drawn by the clear light of the sea and dunes. The Skagen Museum shows their work, and the Anchers' house has been preserved. The Sand-Buried Church, whose white tower survives from a church overwhelmed by drifting sand, stands among the dunes, and the Råbjerg Mile, a vast migrating dune, lies to the south.

Shrimp, plaice and herring come fresh from the harbour, and smoked fish is sold from the quayside. The air is cool and bright, with wind off two seas, and the long light of June evenings is the town's gift to its painters.
