Experience the best of Copenhagen
Copenhagen is Denmark's harbour capital, a low-rise city of canals, royal palaces, bicycles, pastries and a pleasure garden in the middle of town.

Copenhagen spreads across the islands of Zealand and Amager, with harbours and canals shaping the centre. Nyhavn, a seventeenth-century canal lined with coloured houses and old ships, is the classic view. Amalienborg Palace, the royal family's residence, stands on a square near the water, Rosenborg Castle holds the crown jewels, and Tivoli Gardens, open since 1843, mixes flowers, rides and concerts beside the train station.
The Little Mermaid sits on a rock at the harbour's edge, Christiansborg Palace houses Parliament, and the Round Tower has a spiral ramp up to a rooftop view. Christiania, a self-declared free town, occupies former military land. Cyclists dominate the streets. Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, the setting for Hamlet, and the Louisiana museum of modern art sit up the coast, and Roskilde's cathedral and Viking ships lie west.
Danish food starts with smørrebrød, open sandwiches on rye bread, and the pastries known abroad as Danish. Street hot dogs, herring and new Nordic cooking are all part of the table. The summer months have long light evenings, when the harbour swimming spots fill; winter is dark, cold and cosy, with lights and Christmas markets. May to September is best.
