Aarhus lies on a wide bay on the east coast of Jutland and is Denmark's second-largest city. Its university gives it a young, lively feel, and the Latin Quarter's cobbled lanes hold cafés, independent shops and second-hand bookshops. Aarhus Cathedral, a long whitewashed church with a tall tower, stands near the centre, and new buildings have taken over the old docks along the harbour front.
ARoS, the city's art museum, is topped by Your Rainbow Panorama, a circular glass walkway in all the colours of the spectrum with views over the roofs. Den Gamle By, the Old Town, is an open-air museum of timbered houses moved from towns across Denmark, and the Moesgaard Museum shows archaeology, including the preserved Grauballe Man, a bog body.
South of the city lie beech forests and beaches around Marselisborg, where the royal family has a summer residence, and the Mols Hills National Park and the harbour town of Ebeltoft lie to the east on the Djursland peninsula. Rye bread, open sandwiches called smørrebrød and herring are everyday food, and light lingers late on summer evenings while winters are dark and grey.
