Experience the best of Bornholm

Bornholm lies in the Baltic Sea about 150 kilometres east of Copenhagen, closer to Sweden, Germany and Poland than to the rest of Denmark. Its rock is granite in the north, with cliffs and boulders, and sandy in the south. Rønne, the main town, is the island's port, and ferries connect it with Ystad in Sweden and with Zealand.

Four medieval round churches, built as places of worship and refuge, stand in the countryside, among them Østerlars, the largest. Hammershus, on the north-west cliffs, is one of the largest medieval castle ruins in northern Europe. Fishing harbours such as Gudhjem and Svaneke are lined with painted houses, Christiansø, a car-free island group, lies to the north-east, and Dueodde has dunes of fine white sand.

Smoked herring is Bornholm's pride, and sol over Gudhjem, a smoked herring on rye with raw egg yolk, radish and chives, is the local classic, served near the smokehouses with their tall chimneys. The island is among the sunniest places in Denmark, and potters and glassmakers keep studios open in summer.
