Seven Mile Beach runs north from George Town along the west coast of Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands in the western Caribbean. Despite its name the sand is about five and a half miles long, and it is among the best-known beaches in the region, with fine coral sand, shallow turquoise water and sunset views. Hotels, condominiums and restaurants line the road behind it.
The sheltered North Sound, just beyond, holds Stingray City, a sandbar where southern stingrays glide around waders, and the reef-lined shores offer snorkelling and diving, with walls dropping into deep water. Camana Bay, a town centre with an observation tower, sits at the north end of the beach, and the Turtle Centre and the village of Hell, with its black limestone formations, lie in West Bay.
Caribbean seafood dominates the menus: conch fritters and stew, fresh snapper, lobster in season, and heavy cake, a dense cassava sweet. Rum cocktails are served beachside at sunset. Winter is dry and sunny, while summer is hotter, more humid and showery.
