George Town fronts a sheltered harbour on the west coast of Grand Cayman, and its compact centre of low buildings holds the territory's banks and offshore finance firms. The Cayman Islands National Museum occupies a historic building near the waterfront, and the remains of Fort George, built in the eighteenth century to guard the harbour, stand on the shore.
Seven Mile Beach runs north from town along the coast, and offshore the reefs and walls make Grand Cayman one of the Caribbean's main diving centres. The Stingray City sandbar in the North Sound is a boat ride away. East of town, the great house of Pedro St James, dating from the 1780s, stands on a bluff and tells the story of early settlement.
Caymanian cooking relies on conch, served as fritters or stewed, on fresh fish in a peppery sauce, and on heavy cake, a dense sweet made from cassava. In November, Pirates Week brings parades and mock raids to the waterfront. The drier half of the year runs from November to April.
