George Town, the capital, sits on the sheltered west coast of Grand Cayman, a low limestone island ringed by coral. Seven Mile Beach, a long band of pale sand running north from the capital, is lined with hotels, restaurants and dive shops. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and the banking offices of George Town stand beside the cruise piers and the small national museum.
The sea is the main attraction. Stingray City, a shallow sandbar in the North Sound where southern stingrays gather, and the reef walls off the north and west coasts bring snorkellers and divers. Rum Point, on the north shore, has a calm beach and hammocks, the Cayman Turtle Centre in West Bay raises green turtles, and the Mastic Trail crosses an old forest in the island's interior. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, the sister islands, lie to the north-east.
Caribbean cooking meets reef seafood here: conch fritters, spiny lobster, grilled mahi-mahi and Cayman-style snapper cooked in a sauce of tomato, onion, pepper and lime. Heavy cake, made from cassava, is the traditional sweet. Pirates Week brings parades and fireworks each November, and the dry, sunny months from December to April are the coolest.
