Punta del Este occupies a narrow peninsula on Uruguay's coast, where the calm brown water of the River Plate meets the open Atlantic. Playa Mansa, on the river side, has gentle water, while Playa Brava, on the ocean side, has strong surf and wind. La Mano, a huge concrete hand rising from the sand on Brava beach, is the town's best-known sculpture. The harbour is full of yachts and fishing boats, and sea lions gather beside the fish sellers.

Isla de Lobos, offshore, shelters a large colony of sea lions and fur seals, and Isla Gorriti, close to the harbour, has beaches and an old fort. Casapueblo, a whitewashed sculptural house built into the cliff at Punta Ballena by the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, looks over the sunset. East along the coast, José Ignacio is a fishing village with a lighthouse, and vineyards inland grow Tannat.

Grilled meat from the parrilla, fresh fish and the chivito, a steak sandwich with egg, ham and tomato, are the staples, with Tannat red wine, Uruguay's signature grape, and dulce de leche for dessert. The peninsula fills from December to February, and the rest of the year it is quiet and cool.
