Experience the best of Montevideo
Montevideo is Uruguay's relaxed capital on the Río de la Plata, with an old-town peninsula, a long seafront promenade and a love of grilled meat.

Montevideo spreads along the north shore of the Río de la Plata, where the river is as wide as a sea. The Ciudad Vieja, the old town on a small peninsula, is where the city began in the 1720s, a district of Art Deco and colonial buildings. Plaza Independencia opens onto it, with the Palacio Salvo tower and the statue and mausoleum of José Artigas, the national hero, and the Teatro Solís, opened in 1856, stands nearby.
The Rambla, a waterfront promenade of about twenty-two kilometres, links the beaches, including Pocitos, and fills with walkers and mate drinkers in the evening. The Mercado del Puerto is an iron-framed hall of grill restaurants, Parque Rodó is a leafy park, and the Estadio Centenario, built for the first World Cup in 1930, has a football museum. Colonia del Sacramento is about a hundred and eighty kilometres west, and Punta del Este lies east.
The chivito, a steak sandwich piled with ham, egg and cheese, is the national dish, followed by grilled meat from the parrilla and dulce de leche. Tannat is the signature red wine. Candombe drums echo through neighbourhoods, and Carnival lasts weeks.
