Colonia del Sacramento lies on the Río de la Plata in south-western Uruguay, facing Buenos Aires across the estuary. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 and contested with Spain for a century, and its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, keeps the layout and low houses of that time. Cobbled lanes run to the Plaza Mayor, the old city gate with its drawbridge and wall, and the waterfront.

The Calle de los Suspiros, the Street of Sighs, is a narrow cobbled lane with tile-roofed houses, and the lighthouse, built in the nineteenth century within the ruins of a convent, offers a view over the river and rooftops. Vintage cars stand parked along the lanes, and small museums occupy colonial houses. The ruins of a bullring lie a few kilometres up the coast.

Uruguayan food is based on beef: asado grilled over wood, the chivito steak sandwich, and sweet dulce de leche. Tannat, the country's red grape, is made into wine in vineyards nearby, and mate is carried everywhere in a gourd with a thermos. The waterfront faces west, so the sun sets over the river.
