Ljubljana sits on the Ljubljanica River beneath a castle on a wooded hill, and its compact centre is closed to most traffic. The architect Jože Plečnik shaped much of the look of the city, with the Triple Bridge, the riverside market colonnades and the National and University Library. The Dragon Bridge, guarded by four dragons, recalls the city's symbol, and a funicular climbs to the castle.
Prešeren Square, with the pink Franciscan church, is the city's meeting place, and the Central Market sells produce and flowers. Tivoli Park is a large green park on the edge of the centre. Lake Bled, with its island church, is under an hour to the north-west, Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle lie to the south-west, and the Julian Alps and the Adriatic coast at Piran are an easy day out.
Kranjska klobasa, the Carniolan sausage, and štruklji, rolled dumplings, are traditional dishes, and potica, a rolled nut cake, is baked for holidays. Slovenia's wine regions and beekeeping tradition supply wine and honey. From spring the river banks are lined with café tables.
