Lake Bled is a glacial lake set among forested hills, with the peaks of the Julian Alps and the long ridge of the Karawanks behind. On a rock above the north shore, Bled Castle, first recorded in the early eleventh century, is among the oldest in Slovenia. In the middle of the lake, a small island carries the Church of the Assumption, reached by a flight of 99 steps from the landing.
Pletna boats, flat-bottomed wooden boats steered by a standing oarsman, carry people over to the island, where a bell can be rung for luck. A path of about six kilometres circles the lake. The Vintgar Gorge, a wooden walkway above a green river, lies a few kilometres away, and Lake Bohinj, quieter and larger, is further into Triglav National Park, which takes its name from the highest mountain in Slovenia.
Kremšnita, a custard-and-cream cake, is the local sweet, served with coffee in lakeside cafés, alongside Carniolan sausage, potica, a rolled walnut pastry, and honey from Slovenian beekeepers. Trout comes from the mountain streams. The lake is for swimming in summer, the surrounding hills turn gold in autumn, and in cold winters it sometimes freezes.
