Koper stands on Slovenia's small stretch of the Adriatic, on the northern side of the Istrian peninsula, as a working port with a compact old town. For centuries it was a Venetian possession called Capodistria, and its main square, Tito Square, is framed by the Praetorian Palace, the loggia and the cathedral, whose tower can be climbed for a view of the bay. The cathedral holds a painting by Carpaccio.
The Sečovlje salt pans, a nature park of lagoons where salt is still harvested by hand, lie near the Croatian border to the south, not far from Piran, a Venetian-style town on a headland. Further inland, the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO site with a vast underground canyon, and Lipica, where Lipizzaner horses are bred, are within an hour's drive. Trieste lies a short way north in Italy.
Istrian food mixes Italian and Slavic habits: fuži pasta, sea bass and sardines, truffles and green olive oil. Malvazija, a white wine, and the dark red Refošk are made on the hills behind the town. Summer is for swimming from the coast, and the olive and truffle harvests come in autumn.
