Kizimkazi lies on the south-west coast of Unguja, Zanzibar's main island, in two small villages, Dimbani and Mkunguni, on a coast of coral rock, small coves and clear shallow water. Fishermen launch wooden boats from the beach, and a small mosque at Dimbani has a stone with an Arabic inscription dated to the year 1107, among the oldest on the East African coast.
Bottlenose and humpback dolphins live in the Menai Bay Conservation Area, and boats from the village take visitors out to watch them. Beaches nearby are quiet, and Jozani Forest, home of the red colobus monkey, lies inland to the north-east. Stone Town, the historic capital, lies to the north.
Pilau, a spiced rice, grilled fish and octopus in coconut sauce are served in small beach restaurants, with fresh coconut to drink. The weather is hot and humid, with the long rains falling in March to May and a short rainy spell in November.
